Communicate with the Gods
The seeds have a rich cultural and traditional use among native Mexicans such as the Chontal Indians of Oaxaca, the Aztecs and the Zapotecs. It was known that the seeds were used to communicate with the Gods, as well as in rituals to assist in divination and for the healing of various diseases. The Aztecs believed the seeds from the I. tricolor allowed them to be in direction communion with the Sun God. These seeds were considered sacred among the Aztecs along with other entheogenic plants known for their ability to open doors into the unseen worlds similar to Peyote and Salvia divinorum. Like many tribes in South America, the Aztecs believed that every plant has a spirit and a consciousness, however only a few held the gift to open these portals to other worlds. The Chontal and Mazatec Indians believed that there is a strong spiritual energy that resides within this plant, as well as embodying a very evolved spirit that allowed the people of that time to communicate with their Gods.
Ipomoea tricolor is a beautiful flowering plant from the Convolvulaceae (Bindweed) family. It is considered to be native to the New World tropics, however has found itself naturalized in many other regions around the world. It is a herbaceous perennial and annual, which can grow to 4 meters tall. Its leaves are spirally arranged, and its flowers are trumpet shaped that vary in shades from vibrant blue to soft purple with a soft white-yellow to gold centre. The seeds of the plant are in pods that are produced once the plant has reached full maturity. The seeds have a very hard coating, which has to be nicked if the seed is to be used.
The seeds, stem, leaves and flowers contain an ergoline alkaloid that has been traditionally used among native Mexican cultures in shamanic practices and rites.
Traditionally, anywhere from 20-25 seeds were ingested, all the way up too 300+ seeds in order to achieve these states spoken of by the traditional Indians. Often times the seeds were grinded up, and water was added and left to sit for a short period of 20-30 minutes, then the mixture was drunk. Richard Schultes, a revered enthnobotanist claimed that 300+ seeds are needed to have a higher psychedelic experience.
